The review article, published in one of the most prestigious journals in biomaterials research, explores how laser technologies are transforming bioactive glasses for advanced healthcare applications and has been selected as the cover feature of the issue.

LaserON has achieved a new international milestone with the publication of the review article “Laser-Assisted Processing and Modification of Bioactive Glasses: A Review” in Advanced Healthcare Materials, one of the world’s leading journals in biomaterials and biomedical engineering. The article has also been selected as the cover feature of the journal issue, a distinction reserved for research of outstanding scientific relevance and impact.

LaserON researchers worked closely with Prof. Julian Jones from Imperial College London, one of the greatest expert in bioactive glasses in the World. The paper provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in laser-assisted processing and modification of bioactive glasses, bringing together two highly dynamic research fields with significant potential for future biomedical applications.

Bioactive glasses are a unique class of biomaterials capable of interacting with biological tissues and promoting regeneration, particularly in bone repair and tissue engineering applications. Laser technologies, on the other hand, offer exceptional precision, versatility, and customization capabilities, making them powerful tools for transforming these materials into advanced biomedical devices. The review examines the major applications of lasers in the fabrication of bioactive glass coatings, additive manufacturing of three-dimensional implants and scaffolds, surface engineering, and the production of bioactive glass-derived nanomaterials.

The authors highlight how the convergence of laser processing and bioactive glass technology is creating new opportunities for personalized medicine, enabling the development of patient-specific implants, advanced bioactive surfaces, and next-generation regenerative therapies. The paper also identifies key scientific and technological challenges that must be addressed to accelerate the clinical translation of these promising technologies.

The selection of the article for the cover of Advanced Healthcare Materials represents an important international recognition of LaserON’s contributions to the fields of laser materials processing and biomaterials research. The cover artwork illustrates the interaction between a laser beam and a bioactive material, symbolizing the transformative role of laser technologies in the design and manufacturing of innovative solutions for tissue repair and regeneration.

This achievement further strengthens LaserON’s international visibility and reinforces its position as a leading research group in laser-based manufacturing, advanced materials processing, and biomedical applications, areas that are increasingly shaping the future of healthcare technologies.
